Use Your Brian

August 18th 2007 12:19
Unless you are one of the truly gifted whose bodies add muscle easily, whose waists are naturally wasp-like, do not gain weight, and readily adapt to physical regimens your brain is the most important asset you have in the battle for fitness. You will be as fit in the body as you are in the brain. To get your body into the shape you want you will have to learn and apply principles that are not always intuitive. In fact much of really getting into shape involves the counterintuitive. What seems right often is not. Today a few basic axioms that you must keep in mind if you want to obtain fitness.

1. More work is better than less.
This seems obvious, but there is alot of talk about overtraining these days. Yes,you can overtrain, at least in the short term. If you are new to training of any kind I seriously doubt that your body will allow itself to be overtrained. Overtraining is a phenomenon of the obsessive. If you have a normal life, you are unlikely to be working enough to put your body into duress. I recommend that you worry about getting more workouts than less.

2.Work smart. This means that you must understand principles for training-whatever your chosen activity. I have literally encountered 100s of people in the gym that do not know that they can use programs that will multiply their achievements. Exercise is not instinctive. You need expert help to get it right. When you do, you will shake your head with chagrin that you wasted so much time and energy. Learn to earn!

3.Big weights=Big Fitness.
Actually its big weights=big muscles, but the refusal of women to abandon the fear of "getting big" compels me to alter the axiom. If you want to improve fitness you cannot forget that muscles, including the heart, get bigger by facing bigger challenges. If you constantly tell spur yourself to lift heavier and maintain proper technique, you will become fitter and your workouts will become more fun. Last we I grabbed the 100 lb dumbbell off the rack and did some seated behind the head French presses. I enjoyed the workout more, because I felt like I was accomplishing something. Bigger weights is the fast way to accomplish more fitness.

Nothing can be substituted for workouts. People fall into rationalizations about how they are doing something active for the day and that makes it acceptable to skip workouts. This is a self-imposed limitation on ultimate fitness. Nothing can be substituted for a regular regimen of workouts. Your servant,as always.
