Time after Time

May 15th 2008 10:35
I suggest that in almost every endeavor those that are failures are those that cannot or will not come to an understanding with time focus. In the United States the great mass of people are unprepared to retire because they cannot view money in terms of its long term potential to enrich them. They spend it for the now. A trip down the street seems to indicate that the same attitude prevails when it comes to fitness. Putting fitness ahead of short term, immediate pleasures is the central component in a fit body and most do not do it. The fit are a class akin to the self-made rich-rare, misunderstood, and envied.

The essential reality of fitness is that it is an intense exercise in personal discipline. When you are home ruminating on the merits of the sofa as a device of pleasure, it does not make any difference how much you know about training. NMF is here out of a desire to help you get into shape and be fitter.Take a look at the archives and you will see tens of entries about how to train. These have no relevance to the the person who cannot manifest the necessary discipline to apply them.

The whole discipline thing is about the now and the then. If you cannot turn away from right this second and face a month, a year, and a decade from now, you are what you are and that is out of shape. If you are willing to tie your volition to your intellectual assent that a person has to sacrifice to get something good, you are on the road. The how to train part is really pretty easy. The net is loaded with how to.

Only you have access to your will to work and put off now for the joy that a rightly created tomorrow can bring. That involves consistently setting aside the now in favor of the then-knowing all along that there is no guarantee that the then will ever be now! Get this or go to sleep. You are what you will be.

However, the real joy comes from the realization that you can be fitter and stay that way and the laws of habit that may have gotten you out of shape will turn right around and make you fit for decades. Put the future ahead of the present for long enough and that future will be decidedly different than you can imagine now.

If you get yourself into that gym and lift and lift-the true way to be fit-while you are in your twenties you will be a trainer who can wander off from it and return time and again as life presents its vicissitudes.Train in your 30s and your 40s and 50s are more certain. Try to start at the very point when your physcial powers are already in decline and you will be a rare one if you succeed.

I think that the real benefits of the gym come at the point when attrition cannot be denied. A person who has built a fit body and kept it is really a standout at 50-60. It is worth it,but no one can really know that experientially when he/she is 38. Its a matter of faith-the evidence of things unseen!Your servant,as always.
