I discovered this wonderful article on exercise and pregnancy. Of course, I am an advocated of exercising while pregnant as long as your doctor approves -- second opinions are wise too!
I exercised up to the day my water broke. I am glad I did because my recovery time was so easy. I looked great in 6 weeks and a few relatives commented on how great I looked.
In Jeanne Brown's article she takes a personal trainer's perspective to approach exercising when you're pregnant. She bases her article on the recent fitness news about the woman who ran the Chicago marathon nine months pregnant and gave birth a few hours later.
Brown says, "When I first read about her, I was amazed - and judgmental. I thought she was crazy."
I thought, I hope there was enough portable toilets along the course.
The pregnant runner was a seasoned with a doctor`s approval to attempt the marathon. She stay out of harm's way and delivered a healthy baby. Alternating running with walking is how she stayed out of harm`s way.
The story does offer a lesson for those who are in shape or desire to get in shape. It is recommend that you pick a fitness program that keeps you out of harm's way. Even if you are not pregnant, you should consider your physical well-being if you are starting a new fitness program or if you have some sort of pre-existing condition like lower back pain or a knee injury.
Brown's article is worth a read if you are pregnant and want to exercise throughout your pregnancy.
She offers some key benefits to do so. "Pregnant women get the same benefits as everyone else from exercise":
Burn calories
Build strength
Boost energy
Enhance your mood
So, stay in communication with your doctor and have a great time working out while you are pregnant.
