Definite Major Purpose

How does one achieve better than average fitness? I suspect that the answer to this question is pretty much the same as it would be for the achieving of any purpose. It begins with what the famous success writer Napoleon Hill called a "definite major purpose."
I like the term "definite major purpose." It is a rich phrase and when it comes to fitness an appropriate one.If you are training for some ethereal thing like "better shape", you will probably abandon your pursuit out of a sense that you are not accomplishing anything. If you set a definite objective, you have a much greater chance of reaching that goal. Specifically, you will be more likely to succeed if you set a goal that can be quantified in some way. Lets say a dress size or a measurement. When you do this, there has to come a day when you assess your progress. That is the day you focus on in your training. If you want to take a day off that isn't on the schedule, you will be reminded that that day is coming and ditto for eating what you shouldn't. Success at one goal is the best incentive to undertake another goal that there is. If you reach a goal,it will be easy to set another.
That is where the "major" part of our phrase comes in. Major implies,of course, a comparison of purposes. That is because a human is a virtual desire machine, capable of producing and maintaining many desires that with some rational application become purposes. We are quite capable of pursuing a huge number of purposes at the same time, but, given our limitations, we are not capable of giving the same emphasis to every one. Without prioritizing we run the risk falling short in all our pursuits.
So,before undertaking any type of fitness program from losing a few pounds to competing in the Mr. Olympia, you must sit down and determine what the cost will be if you apply yourself fully to it and how much the rewards are really likely to mean to you.If they are going to mean alot, you must consider your purose a major one and give it a very high spot in your life. Start your program with a definite, reachable preliminary goal. When that goal comes your way, go ahead and set another. If that goal is realized in a reasonable time, find out why and start your analysis with how realistic and definite your goal was. If it passes muster, look at your priorities. Your servant,as always.
