If you want to train with weights and don't have a clue how, you are better off than you think. Why? Because I am going to help you get started right and that is half the battle.
Let's assume you have a gym in mind and are willing to join. The gym will give you a complimentary training session. Take it and learn how everything works. Ask lots and lots of questions. This will not be the right time to be shy. If you haven't used weight machines much they can be intimidating, but about two workouts will completely cure that. Make sure the trainer gives you an exercise for every body part- that includes legs (front and back) and calves. Any gym has machines for your whole body. Learn to use one machine for each part. Do no more than that.
Soon I will discuss the relationship between a weight training workouts and cardio equipment workouts. For now don't finish your training system and then try to walk a treadmill, for instance, for awhile. You are either out of shape or in no shape to stress your system. Believe me; your system will feel the stress of muscle exertion, even though your mind says you haven't worked that hard. The first weight workout seems easy to most people, but it will get harder faster than they think. Error on the side of conservatism and do the machines for each body part one time and go home.
Disregard what I just wrote and you will be a casualty of the gym. If you genuinely want to shape up and your desire is strong, that works in your favor until you let enthusiasm overwork your body. Remember this aphorism of mine: "You body does not have a brain". It does not "get" what you are trying to do and cooperate. It is a truly magnificent adaptive organism, which can give you what you want only when you follow ITS "rules" for this adaptive process. Keep looking for No Myth Fitness and I'll be teaching you what to do to cooperate with your body.(The proper order is: you cooperate with your body not the other way around.)
Whatever the trainer tells you make plans to come back in three days and do the routine again. That will mean exactly the same workout two days the first week. On week two come to the workout three days. On the third week add as much weight to your machines as you can do for at least six repetitions for three days. On week four sit down and seriously analyze what you feel like. If you are really raring to go and feeling stronger go ahead and come to the gym and make two circuits of the machines, but only for two training days.
I know what you are thinking. I want to get in shape and this pace means a whole month of not so demanding workouts. I'll never get in shape. Try to tell your body this. It won't listen. Put some of this excess effort into fighting the 800 pound gorilla of fitness: Find a real diet and get going!
