Cesar Millan: Dog and Human Trainer
November 27th 2006 10:49
My heroes are experts who set me straight on some aspect of human endeavor about which I have an interest. I have found in my search for knowledge(Dare I say wisdom in the post -modernist world?) that in every area I will eventually run into someone who actually knows what they are talking about. They are individuals who so cogently and succinctly explain their fields of expertise that I have a "eureka" moment.
One of these heroes is Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer. I have a few dogs relaxing by the fire now as I write and for this reason I took notice of Cesar's television show on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar runs the Dog Psychology Center in Los Angeles. His show is about how to get your dog to be a balanced canine who does not bark too much, bite, or otherwise screw up his life and thereby yours.
Since I watch religiously, I have seen Cesar perform incredible feats. He routinely tames an aggressive dog in minutes. His presence is like that of a Pied Piper for canines. They are putty in his hands. If you have a dog who isn't what you want, give a look to Milan's books and/or dvds.
What makes Cesar Millan exemplary for me is that for a dog's every behavior he has an explanation based on the basic nature of canines. If you have ever wandered why your dog does what he does, I'll bet the Dog Whisperer can tell you what purpose it serves and how to alter or extinguish it(if need be) without detriment to the dog. Now, that's info a dog owner can use!
Why dog training in a human training post? Here's the deal. Many of you would like to be fit, strong, shapely, and healthy. You are willing to go to the gym and exercise to achieve this. You'll diet too. The problem is that you know next to nothing(and that smidgen of knowledge is wrong) about how your body best adapts to exercise or how it reacts to the food you eat. You are like the dog owner who has this dog that rules the house and she/he does not know how to deal with the animal on its level. "Stop, Fluffy" isn't helping.
So, knowledge is the key to training. Specifically, knowledge based on the body as an adaptive mechanism. How much training is enough? What do different kinds of exercise do to and for the body? What kinds of exercise go well and ill together? How can diet be combined with exercise in the optimum way? What is the single most important aspect of getting fit? There are many questions you can't answer, aren't there?
As I always say: Your body does not have a brain. You cannot tell it that you are trying to get into fit shape and order it to take your input and turn it into that fitness, because you really want and are working for this result. This is analogous to "Stop, Fluffy."
Getting fit is a kind of intellectual journey complete with rabbit trails which lead to nowhere and moments of enlightenment. It is information intensive. "Get the right information or fail" is not overstatement. "Get it now or waste time and effort" isn't far off either. I am trying to help and I know of someone that was my Fitness Whisperer and someone who was my Diet Whisperer, when I was a bad, stupid and fat fitness "dog". Stay tuned. Your servant as always.
