Incredible Bulk:Women in Fear
June 21st 2008 12:34
Myth making never rests and the work of the anti-myth crusader is thus never done. Careful readers will soon recognize the territory into which we enter today as that through which we have trudged before.
A recent glimpse at an infomercial assured me that the lies women are told about fitness go on and on. A contrivance of some type appeared on my TV that made the claim that it could offer a ten minute fix to the fitness of women everywhere. The absurdity of that alone should have been enough to set off warning lights in the NMF command center, but this commercial went further. Amidst the scenes of blissful ladies doing what appeared to be simple(but thoroughly effective?!) exercises with blissful smiles on their faces there appeared a new angle-at least to me.Our infobabe guide suddenly appeared amidst a bevy of profoundly fatless, yet shapely professional models. They all assured the viewer in succession that they used the ten minute miracle and that with it they had no worries about falling beneath the spectre that was claimed to stalk any woman who apparently even passes over the threshold of the weight area of a gym-bulking up!
Oh dear readers, the decades pass but the nonsense still flows in full stream. Women really can't do weight training or they will--gulp-- bulk up? That means they will get bigger (and therefore) ugly muscles and within a short period the frontier between the sexes will be breached and they will look like men?Or if not men, they will look all, well, bulky?! Total mythology.
The reality is as follows: Women are already bulking up from about 25 on. Unless they maintain a diet that would make a Spartan hoplite flinch with dread they will continue to pick up a pound here and there until old age. The whole process of pregnancy doesn't help either. That is bulk and it is ugly bulk. We normally call it fat and it lands on women where they least want it. Nature is to blame, you know, not lack of personal integrity.
If women accept the myth that some weight training will bulk them up, they will be left to diet and/or do the cardio thing and still fail to keep fat bulk from slowly overtaking them. If they let off the discipline pedal for a few months they will have some fat bulk to reduce for sure. Cardio is not the answer and dieting is a devilishly hard answer to pursue. What to do? Stop thinking that 10 minutes of simple exercises can really give you the shape you want, ladies, and stop believing the nonsense about weight training. It is your only hope of metabolic and skeletal results that will keep you from the bulk you fear. Read on in the next entry. Your servant, as always.
