Rant of the Week:Women, Look at Arnold and Learn for Pete's Sake

June 10th 2007 14:01
I want to thank the people at Muscle and Fitness Magazine for using a picture to make a point I have used at least a thousand words to try to make. Pick up this magazine, every woman who is reading this. The cover has one of those ultra-modern manipulated pictures which purports to show present day Arnold with a buddy hand on the shoulder of the 70's Arnold in all his massiveness. That 70's picture is stunning. Without the panoply of drugs that the modern star has Arnold was gargantuan.
Arnold Then and Now

The present day Arnold is a very fit 60 year old, whose body would look good on a 30 year old. Gone is the mass, but the proportions are still there. The legs don't swell anymore but the chest is still larger by far than the waist. I wander how much that straight proportioned body contributes in a visceral way to his success as a politician, a profession in the US more about image than substance.?

When I say that picture my immediate thought was that I had found the proof for what I have been trying to tell women for years: you can lift all the weights you want and you will not get big unless you want to be big. If you lift all out and look in the mirror and something is bigger than you want, you need only stop working out and within two weeks you will be heading precipitously back to smaller.

This domain is called No Myth Fitness. Well, that "I'll get big" is the worst myth in the fitness world and practically every woman with whom I have discussed weight training has gotten around to parroting it to me. Look at Arnold. He was so huge, but he isn't now. What is different? In the 70's he devoted every part of his life to being the hugest bodybuilder in history. He trained twice a day and slept between workouts. He used scientific nutrition and,as he has admitted, did a few steroids here and there. Since then he has pursued other activities and his body has taken a backseat. He still works out, but probably less than you do.

You with your feminine body are never going to able to get very big without massive interference with your endocrine system. And you are not going to use drugs, are you? Most of you have reasonably no chance of working out to the extent that anything like big demands. You are normal. You sincerely want to be fit, but it isn't a vision quest. Yet anyone who suggests, like I do, that you are going to get more out of heavy weight training than men is passed off as wrong.

Men want to be big. Look around your gym. There is a crowd of men who have large arms and chests and wear sweat pants or baggies when they train. That's because they do not have anything for legs. Why? There are obsessed with big upper bodies. They have hormones on their side and they train like a fiend from hell and they are not able to bulk up their whole body. Do you think that a serious whole body approach to weights is going to bulk up your feminine body? And, you can train free of that stupid thing that men have about big.

I'll tell you what you are going to get from going into a gym and training as heavy and often as you can. You are going to get what the present day Arnold has. You are going to get proportioned with chest significantly larger than you waist! You are going to get calves that will make high heels into lethal weapons! You will lower the body fat that is your sex's hormonal curse! You will give your body the slight swell of muscle that is oh so attractive!

Seeing Arnold and thinking about women's fitness reminds me of my reaction when I went to the theatre to see Terminator II. I really couldn't concentrate on any scene that Linda Hamilton was in. She had trained like a wildcat before shooting and she had a look that just made my heart race. Big? No! Just really fit with a little swell of muscle. That is what weight training can do, if women jettison that myth about big and get busy. Your servant, as always
